Kampong Svay District Governor Urges Boat Owners to Safely Transport Students

Phnom Penh, June 11, 2024: Mr. Uth Vanra, Governor of Kampong Svay District, has called on boat operators to ensure the safe transport of students traveling to and from Peam Kreng Primary and Secondary School in Kdei Dong Commune, Kampong Svay District, Kampong Thom Province. He issued this directive during his visit to the river crossing used daily by the students, on Monday, June 10, 2024.

During his visit, the Governor emphasized the need for boat owners to maintain their vessels and equipment meticulously. He highlighted the importance of having sufficient life jackets on board and ensuring that the boats are not overloaded, to prevent any accidents that might lead to capsizing.

Moreover, Mr. Vanra stressed that teachers and parents should vigilantly monitor the students’ commute to guarantee their safety. He reminded students to adhere strictly to safety instructions, including wearing life jackets at all times during their boat rides.

Additionally, Mr. Chhun Srey Chhoeun, Principal of Peam Kreng Secondary School, noted the logistical challenges faced by the school. He reported that every day, 101 students, including 37 females, need to cross the river to attend classes. The boats can only carry 50 passengers at a time, although they only have 35 life jackets available, which poses a safety risk.
